I Ride I Recycle – Surf Expo – Green Zone – Orlando, Florida

Thursday, August 9th, 2012

I Ride I Recycle, an international skate deck recycling movement, is debuting its inaugural I Ride I Recycle “Green Zone” at Surf Expo, September 6-8,2012 at the the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL. The “Green Zone” will bring together ‘green’ brands that have made it their mission to promote sustainable business practices and products.

“There is something about being one with the environment when you’re surfing or skateboarding that makes you in tune with nature,” says Doog Becker with Surf Expo, “I think for that reason, most surfers and skaters care about the planet and want to make a difference and do what’s right. That’s why having a Green Zone is perfect for the Surf Expo. We are showcasing companies whose products are made from recycled materials or are otherwise environmentally friendly, thereby keeping waste out of our landfills.”

Foothill Ranch, CA – I Ride I Recycle, the FIRST-EVER international skate deck recycling movement is debuting another first for the action sports industry this September 6 through 8, 2012 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL – the I Ride I Recycle “Green Zone” at Surf Expo.

The “Green Zone” at the global water sports and beach lifestyle tradeshow is a newly designated area of Surf Expo this year where a consortium of like-minded, “green” brands have come together under the I Ride I Recycle name to promote sustainable business practices and products ranging from swimwear, flip flops and skate decks to sunglasses and retail surface tile made from broken, recycled skate decks.

“I Ride I Recycle is the action sports industry’s recycling and sustainability umbrella,” says co-founder Bruce Boul. “We’re really excited to evolve and include more companies to become part of a movement that’s not only doing good for the environment, but also creating community and supporting charities.”

Started by Bruce Boul and Rich Moorhead, founders of Art of Board, a company that creates hard tile surfaces and retail displays, peel and stick wall graphics and printed textiles from discarded skateboard decks, the movement’s goal is to encourage skate and surf shops, skateboard manufacturers, skate parks and individual riders to join the movement and recycle their broken decks.

Though IRIR was birthed out of and remains rooted in skateboard culture, it’s becoming more apparent that whether you ride a skateboard, surfboard, boogie board, wake board or snowboard, you want to “ride and recycle.”

“Our goal is to have an even larger pavilion at next year’s Surf Expo and be known as the industry standard to provide action sports brands with sustainable certification,” says Boul. “We’re thrilled to align with the International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASC) and the below brands to deliver a comprehensive recycling service to skate and surf shops at no cost while bringing an incentive to the customer to come through their doors.”

Tribu, a company that makes sandals from recycled materials will be launching their “Sole Initiative” in the Green Zone. The “Sole Initiative” is an effort to keep used rubber tires out of landfills. Their “Upcycled” line of flip-flops has soles made from discarded tires from landfills. To get this initiative off the ground, they have started a Kickstarter campaign to help raise the money needed to display at the expo and raise awareness of their efforts. To contribute to this cause, please visit http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/627705205/tribu-sole-initiative-sandals-made-from-discarded.

BambooSK8, an ecologically based brand/manufacturer of skateboard decks made from bamboo harvested from sustainable managed bamboo forests, will be in the Green Zone at the Surf Expo. “We have supported this movement for a few years and are excited to be at the forefront of the expansion of sustainable practices in the skate industry,” says Mark Olson with BambooSK8. Eqo USA is closing the recycled product circle with sunglasses made from recycled-broken skateboards. This company will be launching some new collaboration shades at the Surf Expo, so come by the Green Zone to check them out. To see how it’s done visit, http://eqo-optics.com

Transworld Skateboarding 2012 TWS awards show in Hollywood 2/17/12

Friday, February 17th, 2012

BambooSK8 was excited to attend this years award show – congrats to all the winners.

Hollywood, CA – TransWorld SKATEboarding just announced this year’s TWS Award recipients tonight in Southern California as skateboarding stars came out in force and packed out the Avalon Hollywood. Veteran emcees Brian Schaefer and Lizard King presided over the biggest night in skateboarding as the best skaters of 2011 took to the stage to receive their coveted awards.

Starting out the night, former pro and longtime industry leader Don Brown accepted this year’s Eric Stricker Memorial Award for his continual contribution to the skateboarding industry for over twenty years.

Next up, Best Rookie, went to Sk8mafia’s Wes Kremer–dropping two epic video parts and landing a TransWorld SKATEboarding cover in 2011– the award couldn’t have gone to a better rookie pro. With a spontaneous skate style reminiscent of Tom Penny, and the best attitude around, this guy continues to spill out talent for days.

Best Video Part went to Nyjah Huston for his mind-blowing Rise & Shine solo part, released on iTunes 11.11.11. Nyjah truly raised the bar this year with his enormous handrails, technical rail skating, and cheating death with some seriously heavy slams.

Nike SB’s SB Chronicles, Vol. 1 took home Best Video. With an eclectic mix of skaters from Wieger Van Wageningen to Grant Taylor, and Jason Hernandez’ high production value, this video hands down couldn’t be beat.

Best Team was a no brainer as Real proved themselves with their huge stack of incredible talent this year, putting out a five-year-in-the-making video in 2011, and Dennis Busenitz winning the Tampa Pro.

Grant Taylor won Best Transition for the second time in his career (first time in 2010). Jason Dill said it best, “Grant is the greatest skater on the face of the Earth right now.”

Accepting his second award of the night, Nyjah Huston got up on stage again, this time to receive the honors of Best Street Skater. With two TransWorld covers and multiple interviews in the magazine, in addition to his amazing part in Rise & Shine, Nyjah’s year was undeniable.

As if two awards for the night wasn’t enough, Nyjah Huston brought his tally to three with the acceptance of the only award not chosen by the TWS staff, but rather by the readers of the magazine and skateboarding.com– the New Era Readers’ Choice Award. Three awards in one night has only ever happened to one other skater, Guy Mariano, who back in 2008, also won in the exact same three categories.

Directly following the awards, the films began, starting out with TransWorld‘s 2012 Skate & Create video winner: Skate Wars by Creature. Before TWS’ The Cinematographer Project film would take over, Ohio native Dan Mizicko premiered his winning entry, Skate Harvest. The crowd was blown away as A-list pros and full-length parts rolled out as TWS’ legendary filmmaker Jon Holland showcased thirteen of the best filmmakers in skateboarding in the latest TransWorld SKATEboarding film, The Cinematographer Project. The film included over an hour of top skating and filming from the industry’s best. When all was said and done, this was the biggest and best Awards night yet. Congratulations to all the winners!

Maloof Money Cup – Orange County, CA – 7/12/9

Monday, July 13th, 2009

BambooSK8 was found this weekend at the Maloof Money Cup not only to promote the bambooSK8 brand but to see all the intense competition for the huge $ prize money; $100,000 went to Chris Cole for winning the street contest.  Everyone and their brother from the industry was out, so it was nice catching up with all the folks who make it happen…  The fans were going crazy beating those little aired up bats like they use to do at the baseball games, which became annoying but nonetheless, we all appreciated the spirit.  Quite a few people were found stealing seats, which sucked for us that had assigned seats in specific areas under the shade (still about 90 degrees) so we had to yell a few times.  Since we were at the Orange County fair, we even took a moment to ride an elephant.

TRANSWORLD:

The second annual Maloof Money Cup went off today at the Orange County Fairgrounds with (just like we said last year), some of the gnarliest skateboarding we’ve ever seen in a contest. Young vert ripper Alex Perelson nailed a 900 and first place in the vert comp, Adam Dyet landed a kickflip back tail down the Rincon rail and took the Best Trick, and Black Box dominated the street course with Chris Cole taking first and the 100 Gs and Tommy Sandoval coming in second. Not too bad for a day’s work. Photos, videos, interviews, and everything else in between will be coming to you in the next couple of days. Stay tuned.
