Ride the Beat Tour

Event Title

Scion Presents “The Ride the Beat Tour.”

Hosts:

Bam Margera, Greg Lutzka

Date, Time, Location:

March 31th, 4-8:00pm, Cream City Skate Park in Butler, Wisconsin

Event Description:

Milwaukee’s first professional skateboard competition. Skaters from all over the country will come to show off their skills, in hopes, to win the first place trophy! The skaters would shred to the best music provided by DJ Cut up!

Funding:

Event was sponsored Toyota Scion and promoted by Aziz Promotions.

Event follow-up:

Over 15 skaters attended this competition which was well under the estimated 100 skaters that the event predicted. Initially, the event was to be held at the US Cellular Arena located in downtown Milwaukee. However, due the over estimation of ticket sales and participants, the event was moved to a significantly smaller venue.  Overall, the event would have brought in more people if the promoters would have enlisted more marketing tactics and were better organized.  Nonetheless, new events are always a gamble so we hope next years event can pull it together.  We sent 2 of our Midwest interns over from Wisconsin and Illinois.

People began to show up at about 3:30 to pick up tickets and stand in line for the doors to open. As they did and were looking for VIP passes, the promoter was nowhere to be found, which is never good. He, also, was not reachable via cell phone. The event was to begin at 4pm yet, it did not being until 5:15. Greg Lutzka MC’d the event, as well as participating in some of the runs with the competing skaters.  Greg is always a great guy!

The competition consisted of 15 skaters completing runs two at a time while the judges scored their tricks based on style and difficulty. It was divided into three sessions that lasted 20 minutes each.

Bam Margera entered the facility at 6pm and began to sign skateboards and take pictures. We were able to get through the line, get our pictures and boards signed in less than 5 minutes.  We like Bam and all the Jackass stars but Bam seemed a little out of it – we hope all is well with him.

BambooSK8 team ready to destroy the competition (not the forest) at Tampa Am

Oceanside, December 1st, 2011: BambooSK8 couldn’t be more excited for its team riders, Matt Cartledge and Ryan Strader to be competing this weekend against 200 of the best amateur skateboarders in the world at the Tampa Am in Tampa, Florida.
When team manager Nate Wooldridge was asked why it is so important for Ryan and Matt to be at the Tampa Am representing BambooSK8, he answered, “Because it is simply the biggest amateur competition of the year and anybody that is important in the industry is going to be there.” No doubt that BambooSK8 is banking on this by sending their 2 best skaters who are a part of a newly developed team for 2012. It is the company’s goal that strong results in this competition will be the catalyst to bringing the brand to the forefront of the skateboard industry as more skaters will recognize the extra POP and the incredible strength that bamboo skate decks provide for their skaters and fans of the eco-minded brand.
Matt and Ryan who have similar styles are known for being down to skate any terrain whether it is ledges, manual pads, big gaps, handrails, weird obstacles, you name it and they will both skate it. Recently Ryan just landed a frontside 270 to switch frontslide boardslive shuv; a monster of a trick. Matt’s style has been compared to Sierra Fellers while Ryan’s has been compared to Chris Roberts. Ryan Strader is from Austin, Texas and, in addition to BambooSK8, is sponsored by Capital Skate Park, DVS, Good Life wheels, The Shop in Oak Cliff, Silver Trucks, FKD Bearings. The 18-year-old Matt Cartledge is also sponsored by Bunger Sayville Skate Shop, and is from Wantagh, New York.
The Tampa Am is hosted at the Skate Park of Tampa, also known as SPoT. The park has gained recognition over the years from hosting Pro and Amateur events that have featured riders such as Bob Burnquist, Bucky Lasek, and Danny Way. The Skate Park of Tampa has been open since 1993 and has hosted the Tampa Am annually since 1994. This year’s event starts at 9:00 am Thursday, December 1st and goes until 9:00pm on Sunday, December 4th. The Skate Park of Tampa is located at 4215 East Columbus Drive in Tampa, FL.

Cows, kids and pro skater Christian Hosoi

Cows-Kids-and Pro Skater, Christian Hosoi

By Ron Stebenne – Freestyle Promotions International/BambooSK8

Tunnel Hill GA – You would never expect to see a cow skateboarding anywhere in Georgia.  Almost as unusual is to see a world renowned professional skateboarder in Tunnel Hill, Georgia. However, on Saturday, April 10, both a cow and Christian Hosoi where skateboarding in the same place, the North Georgia Skate Park in Tunnel Hill.  The ‘Cow’ was indeed skateboarding on the ramps courtesy of the event sponsor, Chick Fil-A of Walnut Square Mall in Dalton.  Christian was brought to the park by the owner, Loretta Scriven to provide an equally unique opportunity for skateboarders to see, hear, and experience Hosoi’s life journey through wealth, fame, prison, and his redemption.

Hosoi’s journey began when he was just a young teenager in the early 80’s.  His bold skate tricks, movie star looks, and his aggressive nature put him on the fast track to fame, money, and all the world had to offer, including drugs which eventually led to his arrest for possession of 1 ½ pounds of crystal meth in January of 2000.  He served 4 years in prison in San Bernardino California Central Detention Center.  Prior to his arrest, Hosoi was Tony Hawk’s biggest competitor in contests.  Millions of kids watched Hosoi and Hawk battle it out on ramps.  In 2000, these two skateboard greats went in two very different directions.

In many ways, Hosoi’s arrest saved his life and created a whole new life for him. Hosoi says, “ I traveled the world 10 times over and no one told me about Christ.   It’s weird but I invented a trick they call the “Christ Air”, my nick name is Christ, but no one told me about Christ.  When I finally hit rock bottom, I was open for Christ to come in.”   Since his arrest, Hosoi has been clean and sober.  He is married and has 4 children and is dedicated to his family.  Moreover, he turned his life over to his Lord, Jesus Christ, and freely shares his journey with those who will listen.  Now as a pastor for The Sanctuary Church in Westminster, California, is travels the world to proclaim his faith, share his life, share the Gospel, and skate in contests and shows in the hopes of changing the lives of young skaters worldwide.

On Saturday, Hosoi was at the North Georgia Skate Park in Tunnel Hill for a purpose beyond just hanging with the kids as a pro.  “I wanted to come here and see if I could make a difference in the people’s lives in this community and influence them to do something positive, to steer them away from the kinds of things I went through.  I now know it’s about making the right choices, knowing good life-skills, and being good members of society rather than going down the roads that a lot of kids don’t make it out of.”

Park owner, Loretta Scriven, made the event possible because she felt the kids needed to hear these words from someone they respected and looked up to.  By the response from the crowed of young and older skaters, she was right.  After Hosoi’s talk, dozens of youth and adults crowded around Hosoi to pray with him and be close to the legend.  Later they crowded around him to get his autograph and ask questions.  Hosoi patiently talked to everyone, had pictures taken with the kids and even skated with them.

Loretta Scriven hopes to have more events and guest pros in this new facility.  She and Christian have the same vision, to bridge Christianity and skateboarding, to positively impact the youth in all of Georgia and beyond, and to provide a safe place for kids and families to truly recreate themselves in mind, body, and spirit.

Beverly Hills 90210 Tony Hawk Charity event

Monday, October 12th, 2009

BambooSK8 was proud to join the Tony Hawk foundation for the 2nd time by attending another charity event in Beverly Hills.  This event took place at Billionaire ROn Burkles humble abode; yes, I said Billionaire.  I believe that only 800 people are allowed to attend based on starting donations of $350 but additional money is raised by numerous auctions such as an autographed fender bass from the Dave Matthews band or a guitar signed by Social Distortion to autographed skate decks to vacations to sport memorabilia to a vehicle (spiced up by DUB), etc.  In addition, around $50,000 was raised for the watts skatepark just from pure donations on the whim.  20 at-risk youth were brought in thanks to donations.  In fact, one  of our little Loopd Eco Tribe skaters made a donation, so I made sure I got him a special autograph from Tony Hawk.  Reality is, this event is filled with a mix of celebrities and rich folks but all of which who enjoy doing their part to help the skateparks, all the while doing the horse-and-pony show for their kids who get to meet Tony Hawk.  I must say Tony does a great job keeping it real and down-to-earth.  In fact, Tony went for a 900 not one, not twice, not even three times but more like 5 times – pulling it off until running off the side of the ramp.  Dude is over 40 and killing it out there for the crowd!  Bucky Lasek, Andy Macdonald, Kevin Stabb, PLG and a few others joined him on the ramp.   About a dozen booths were set up from organizations or companies like Yo Baby / Kick flipper, UFC, Best Buy, DUB magazine, Pinks Hot Dogs, Nixon, etc.  Literally, you walk away with bags of goodies including shirts, hats, stickers, belts, drum sticks, guitar picks, shoes, and tons more.  This year Blink 182 performed, which was really cool to finally see them live – not that they are even remotely talented in light of other musicians, but they have catchy songs and are incredibly funny with their interactions with each other onstage and with the crowd.  Tom joked, “This song was a hit in the 90′s.”  I do have to say that Travis Barker is a mad man on those drums and I have the utmost respect for him, as a drummer and as a businessman.  Many years ago, I looked at buying his house out in Corona… in fact, it was right down the road from me at the time.  Anyhow, other celebrities included Jeremy Piven, Eric Estrada, Vern ’mini me” Troyer (who gave $1000 for TOny hawk’s shoes and deck he skated), Chuck Liddell from UFC, Perry Farrel (Janes Addiction), Johnny Knoxville, Holly Robinson Pete, Tom Green, and a bunch more.  A special shout out to the entire crew that makes this event happen…from the valet guys at the front gates to the mansion, to the food crew, to the security, to the organizers and promoters, to the Tony Hawk Foundation, Ron Burkle, and all the people who generously donate year after year; without these folks our youth might not have a safe haven to go skate at.  It is these skateparks that keeps kids out of trouble and gives them hope for a better life while also keeping them healthy and positive.

BambooSK8 visits local Venice school

Monday, September 28th, 2009

I recently visited a local Venice school to speak to the students about life, business and bamboo…  The presentation was well received by the skaters and I will likely be returning to do some hands-on learning lessons about business.

The goal will be to teach the students the entire process of starting a skateboard company from ordering product, handling logistics, quality control, how to market it, how to understand sales, understanding profit margins and income statements, balance sheets, etc.

Who knows – one of these sharp studens might be leading the next hot skate brand…you just never know.

If you are interested in having BambooSK8 come speak at your school – by all means – let us know, we would be happy to contribute.

thanks,

Geoff Koboldt

Bamboosk8 visits worlds largest skatepark in Shanghai, CHINA

Friday, May 15th, 2009

Last month, BambooSK8 visited Shanghai, China to visit the worlds largest skatepark; over 150,000 sq. feet.  This park was insane to say the least… although we only saw maybe 6 skaters total; all of which were from other countries.  For the $3 to enter, it was well worth it… especially on a bamboo skate deck.

Santa Clarita brand new $1.5 million skate park grand opening

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

A few of us made the 2.5 hour trek from Oceanside up to the windy/sunny Santa Clarita, about 30 minutes north of Los Angeles for the brand new skate park grand opening.  Such an amazing park with literally over 1000 bikers, skaters, scooters and rollerbladers.  We saw some knarly wipeouts when skaters crashed into bikers in the bowl.  Pure chaos!!  Bamboosk8 had a small booth and handed out some of our 100% bamboo decks to those who wanted to join the eco revolution and skate bamboo.  It was nice to see Lance Mountain, Brian Patch and Austin Poynter tearing up the bowl.

Loopd sponsorship – ECO TRIBE

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

BambooSK8 has established a new 6-tier level system for sponsorship on the Loopd network; ranging from scout to warrior to council to chief to shaman and finally factory am/pro. The discounts range from 30% up to 70% on skate decks based on what level one is at, along with what level of activity one is maintaining on the loopd network – ie. # of profile views. This new incentive system should incentivize those who want to differentiate themselves as better reps for the company, better skaters in general, and finally those that have an entrepreneurial spirit.

We would like to thank all of those currently in the ECO TRIBE and welcome all new members who have a positive attitude and want to make a difference in the skate community.
