Summary from San Diego’s Clash At Clairemont 7

Monday, June 3rd, 2013

Perfect San Diego weather and an awesome lineup of pro skaters and music meant that a best-ever turnout of over 1000+ people came out on Saturday to Clash at Clairemont.

“This seventh annual event highlighted an all-time brotherhood of skateboarding where all the pros came together for a great cause to help fundraise for travel and other expenses that insurance doesn’t cover for those going through cancer,” said Mike Rogers, founder, Grind for Life. “This year was the best turn-out ever. The Sonic Generations of Skate competition was a great addition to the Clash at Clairemont. The kids were stoked on the triples and the variety of runs put together by the different generations of pros.”
Clash also benefits the Mission Valley YMCA.

Bamboo Skateboards has supported Clash since its inception and we couldn’t have been happier to be part of another successful day.  It was a busy one—lots of people dropped by the booth to pick up a new deck or learn about our company.  It was super fun to catch up with old faces like our friends at Hookit, SK8ology, Sanuk, Mostic to name a few, as well as meeting a few new ones, such as Phun.

Highlights included listening to POD play at the 91X Music Stage, watching Mix Master Mike from the Beastie Boys spin and watching Tony Hawk, Andy Macdonald, and Mitchie Brusco win the Sonic Generation of Skate.  We also appreciated the VIP access to get up and close to watch all the vert skating without an interrupted view, enjoying great food from a variety of vendors and rubbing elbows with our skate heroes.

This year, the Clash at Clairemont 7 featured the Sonic Generations of Skate presented by Sonic Lost World! This unique team competition format celebrates three generations of half-pipe skateboarding over the past decades. Each Team consists of one 40-something skater (first generation), One 30-something skater (second generation) and one 20- something or younger skater (third generation) competing against the other teams with the same mix! The event featured four contests: individual runs, high air, best trick and team triples, where each pro competed against their own generation for team points. Every individual pushed the level of progression with technical lip tricks, varied aerials, and more.

Sonic Generations of Skate Results

2nd Place:  Team Purple – Kevin Staab, Bucky Lasek, Marcelo Bastos
3rd Place:  Team Yellow:  Mike McGill, Pierre Luc Gagnon, Jimmy Wilkins
4th Place:  Team Red:  Sergie Ventura, Lincoln Ueda, Adam Taylor

Bamboo Skateboards is stoked that this years Clash was a success—word on the street is that over $11,000 was raised—and we look forward to supporting next year’s event!

Sonic Generations of Skate will air nationally on FOX Sports Net beginning on November 29th at 5 pm and 11 pm.  Bamboo Skate will be releasing a video in the coming weeks from our experience.

Great job and hats off to Chris Conway, Mike Rogers, Andy Macdonald, Lazlo and the others that make this such a successful event each year with 2013 being the best!!

Clash at Clairemont 6 – it rained, the wind was crazy but we hung in there! March 17, 2012

Many of you probably don’t realize all that goes into planning out an event, as you just show up and see all these tents and stages set up.  For those that actually put on the event, it is a ton of work and often you are hedging your risk that people will actually come out and participate.  As a sponsor, there is a lot of planning involved to ensure you have all the items to set up your booth, the right mix of decks and graphics to sell, ensuring your employees show up at the right times, promoting the event ahead of time, putting up banners, logistics to get everyone to the event, minimizing our pollution by carpooling, minimizing our trash, etc.  Knowing the weather had a 100% chance of rain, we were a little worried but nonetheless, we knew we had to brave it and be there to support not only the event which benefits the YMCA and GRIND FOR LIFE but for that one kid who might get educated on our bamboo decks.  In years past, it was always exciting to literally see every 1 out of 3 kids walking around with a BambooSK8 deck – many of which were purchased to get autographs from their favorite pro skaters – guys like Tony Hawk, PLG, Bucky Lasek, Andy Macdonald, Christian Hosoi, Steve Caballero and many more.  Well, this year the rain came down hard and the winds blew like crazy, but we stood strong and still persevered.  This said a lot about our company and the others who didn’t wimp out.  Honestly, there are plenty of people in the world whose conditions are far worse than a little rain and wind, so who are we to complain at all.

A highlight for us was when Tony Hawk sent someone from the YMCA over to our booth and said “Tony Hawk wants your Capped Langur deck…what does he have to do to get it?”  We were like, “Duh – just give him one.”  As a result, he autographed a deck made out to us, which was very kind of him.  Tony is a legend and has done a lot of goodwill towards building skateparks and helping kids getting healthier through the exercise of skateboarding.  It would have been nice to see him skate today, but the weather didn’t permit it.  Other legends included Duane Peters, Steve Caballero, Tony Magnusson and Christian Hosoi.

Another highlight is always seeing the future young pros – skaters like Austin Poynter and Allysha Bergado.  Both of these kids skated for me on Termite Skateboards years ago when they were very young and I’m always excited to see their growth as people and as skaters.

All in all, we had a great day – we sold some skateboards, raised some money for charity, met some new fans, educated others on bamboo, hung out with our friends, networked with other brands, had some free Bull Taco and some free Jack in the Box.  Later that night, we all partied at the Hard Rock in San Diego with everyone – PLG, Tony Hawk, Bucky Lasek, Mike Rogers, etc.

Thanks to Chris Conway, Mike Rogers, YMCA and many more.  We’ll see you next year!!!

Transworld Skateboarding 2012 TWS awards show in Hollywood 2/17/12

Friday, February 17th, 2012

BambooSK8 was excited to attend this years award show – congrats to all the winners.

Hollywood, CA – TransWorld SKATEboarding just announced this year’s TWS Award recipients tonight in Southern California as skateboarding stars came out in force and packed out the Avalon Hollywood. Veteran emcees Brian Schaefer and Lizard King presided over the biggest night in skateboarding as the best skaters of 2011 took to the stage to receive their coveted awards.

Starting out the night, former pro and longtime industry leader Don Brown accepted this year’s Eric Stricker Memorial Award for his continual contribution to the skateboarding industry for over twenty years.

Next up, Best Rookie, went to Sk8mafia’s Wes Kremer–dropping two epic video parts and landing a TransWorld SKATEboarding cover in 2011– the award couldn’t have gone to a better rookie pro. With a spontaneous skate style reminiscent of Tom Penny, and the best attitude around, this guy continues to spill out talent for days.

Best Video Part went to Nyjah Huston for his mind-blowing Rise & Shine solo part, released on iTunes 11.11.11. Nyjah truly raised the bar this year with his enormous handrails, technical rail skating, and cheating death with some seriously heavy slams.

Nike SB’s SB Chronicles, Vol. 1 took home Best Video. With an eclectic mix of skaters from Wieger Van Wageningen to Grant Taylor, and Jason Hernandez’ high production value, this video hands down couldn’t be beat.

Best Team was a no brainer as Real proved themselves with their huge stack of incredible talent this year, putting out a five-year-in-the-making video in 2011, and Dennis Busenitz winning the Tampa Pro.

Grant Taylor won Best Transition for the second time in his career (first time in 2010). Jason Dill said it best, “Grant is the greatest skater on the face of the Earth right now.”

Accepting his second award of the night, Nyjah Huston got up on stage again, this time to receive the honors of Best Street Skater. With two TransWorld covers and multiple interviews in the magazine, in addition to his amazing part in Rise & Shine, Nyjah’s year was undeniable.

As if two awards for the night wasn’t enough, Nyjah Huston brought his tally to three with the acceptance of the only award not chosen by the TWS staff, but rather by the readers of the magazine and skateboarding.com– the New Era Readers’ Choice Award. Three awards in one night has only ever happened to one other skater, Guy Mariano, who back in 2008, also won in the exact same three categories.

Directly following the awards, the films began, starting out with TransWorld‘s 2012 Skate & Create video winner: Skate Wars by Creature. Before TWS’ The Cinematographer Project film would take over, Ohio native Dan Mizicko premiered his winning entry, Skate Harvest. The crowd was blown away as A-list pros and full-length parts rolled out as TWS’ legendary filmmaker Jon Holland showcased thirteen of the best filmmakers in skateboarding in the latest TransWorld SKATEboarding film, The Cinematographer Project. The film included over an hour of top skating and filming from the industry’s best. When all was said and done, this was the biggest and best Awards night yet. Congratulations to all the winners!

Check out more updates, photos, and video footage from the amazing show at skateboarding.com. The 14th Annual TransWorld SKATEboarding Awards Presented By New Era is proud to be supported by additional sponsors, including Red BullKRÜ 82 Vodka, and Aerial 7.

BambooSK8 Unveils the Latest in Environmentally Friendly Skateboards at THE KI event

SAN DIEGO, October 21, 2010 – BambooSK8, a leading developer of eco-friendly, bamboo constructed skateboard decks, today announced that the company will be a featured partner at THE KI (key) event on San Francisco’s historic and proposed self-sufficient Treasure Island, October 22-24th.

BambooSK8 will be setting up a series of ramps built amongst a myriad of BambooDNA art installations while providing skate demonstrations throughout the weekend.  Guests will have the chance to touch and feel the amazing quality of the bamboo skateboards and longboards and meet some of the pro skaters, including guests from Mostic.

BambooSK8 is releasing a series of new longboards ranging from a 39” square tail to a 42” double-kick to a 44” pintail.  Furthermore, their innovative 65mm custom wheels are made from 20% corn; reducing the dependency on traditional 100% urethane.  Another forward-thinking activity by this revolutionary company!  Also, 4 new short board graphics will be released along with 2 brand new decks; a 7”x28” kid’s board and a 10”x31” old-school pool deck shape for pool skaters.

THE KI embraces the smart-living lifestyle of innovation, creativity, technology and sustainability. Established as a platform to present the latest in advanced thinking and smart-living, THE KI will join some of the world’s most innovative brands, designers, thinkers, leaders and influencers to share the future of better living.

“The world is changing and responsibility to the environment has become a top concern for us across the board as it should for most leaders, said Geoff Koboldt, president and owner of BambooSK8.  Tens of millions of maple trees are ripped down yearly to make skateboards after taking 40-50 years to mature.  We pride ourselves as being innovators in eco-skateboard deck design while reducing our impact on the environment by using bamboo, a grass that easily regenerates in 3-4 years.

BambooSK8 decks are not only ‘green’ and environmentally friendly but extremely durable and field tested around the world.  BambooSK8 creates extremely light weight bamboo boards that are significantly stronger than maple decks.  Furthermore, the process allows the molecular fibers of the bamboo to be pressed under intense pressure creating supreme stiffness and resilience within the deck.  The combination of these features creates a highly responsive deck with a long lasting pop resulting in less skateboards going into landfills.  Towards that end, many decks are recycled and reused in various art projects including those found at Burningman.

About BambooSK8
