As part of our philanthropic efforts, we headed up to the tough gang-ridden neighborhood of Watts, California to pass out some free bamboo decks and complete skateboards. This was part of our “100 decks for 1” program, which gives 1 skateboard per every 100 we sell to charities that help at-risk youth. It is our honor and privilege to do what we can to help inspire others and hope that others can do the same in their community.
This time we supported an organization called Bridge to Skate - www.bridgetoskate.org who was kind enough to introduce us to some deserving kids. We agreed that we could create a positive experience for the kids and in way make them feel devalued or feel like they are at-risk; for their lives are all they know. They also have a skate contest 1x/month, which was cool to watch all the kids shredding in the new park that was developed thanks to the funding of Tony Hawk’s Standup For Skateparks. I remember being at that fundraiser, so it’s good to see the tangible rewards.
Whenever you tell someone you are going to Compton or Watts, both in S. Central Los Angeles, people often say, “Are you crazy?” The area is notorious for violence and gangs. Nonetheless, what does it say about us as human beings if we only focus our energies on those who can afford our products in safe areas with modern conveniences? Not everyone has the same life’s situation so it is our duty to help others who don’t have it as easy. It’s important that every customer of our products knows that their purchase is helping someone else.
Despite all the fears (created by others) of driving through Watts, the skate park is situated in a very nice section on Central avenue at the WLCAC with other buildings and activities that brings about a strong sense of community. There is no doubt these kids have it tough; some of which have to risk being shot at or being harassed by gangs by simply skating down the road. Nonetheless, they show up and forget about all that when they are skating and that’s the magic of skateboarding! We met a lot of really nice, respectful kids and wonderful supervisors and parents who care a lot about these kids.
As I drove home, I looked at the beautiful expansive view from the 105 freeway which included snow-capped mountains 50+ miles to the East, skyscrapers of downtown Los Angeles to the north about 10 miles, Hollywood sign to the Northwest about 15 miles, ocean to the right. I thought to myself, “Do many of these kids ever get to experience this or are they stuck in their bubble of space and time fighting for survival?” At that moment, I felt grateful for the gift of giving. Whether or not any of these kids will become future pro skaters or not, it doesn’t really matter. For this moment, they had fun and some of them got a free new skateboard and the chance to do something positive, something healthy, something fun. I trust the universe will take care of them and fill them with joy during their time on a bamboo skateboard. To me, that’s the real raw beauty of skateboarding.
To help build our completes, we asked the skateboard industry for assistance this time. Unfortunately, not one of the pro distribution companies (Dwindle, BlackBox, Blitz, Syndrome, etc.) were able to step up to provide trucks (hopefully next time!!!), but we did receive some wheels and grip tape from Starnet Production; so thank you Vincent!!

Rebecca Mink Presents: California Dreaming: An Eco-Fashion Show
24 OCTOBER 2012
Calling all Los Angeles Fashionistas!
Head to Los Angeles Green Festival November 17-18 and check out the latest in eco-friendly and vegan wear, promoting and supporting environmental initiatives and animal rights, as Rebecca Mink presents, “California Dreaming: An Eco-Fashion Show.”
Rebecca Mink, a native of southern California, has devoted her entire life to the mission of preserving the planet and the humane treatment of animals.
Rebecca was torn between the high-end fashion she loved, and the animals and planet she adored. Noticing the lack of luxurious vegan shoes in the marketplace, she made it her mission to create the choice. Rebecca conceived the ultimate alternative and Mink was born!
Dazzling and unabashedly sexy, Mink shoes effortlessly reflect Rebecca’s own sensibilities with their effervescent glamour and towering heels, which effectively elongate a woman’s legs and give her a confident posture. But perhaps more importantly, the line proves Rebecca’s conviction that a non-leather alternative can outperform traditional shoes.
Effortlessly alluring and genuinely vivacious Rebecca is among the new breed of young designers who are leading the fashion industry into an era of environmental responsibility without sacrificing creativity and style. In Mink shoes, Rebecca has designed the footwear for the next generation who knows that glamour and a respect for the environment can walk side by side.
Make sure to check out Marina DeBris’ Trashion Fashion. All couture outfits are made from disposed objects found in Los Angeles waterways.;
“Calfornia Dreaming: An Eco-Fashion Show” will make its Los Angeles Green Festival debut Saturday November 17 at 6pm on the Main Stage. Be sure to stop by and see the sexy and beautiful models with Bamboo Longboards walking down the runway!

What is LA HUB? What is “any city” HUB? We recently attended the LA launch – having been invited by our friends at ROOZT.com – to find out. We are always excited by heading down to the warehouse/arts district of downtown Los Angeles, which is a mecca for creative minds to unite. The night started around 8pm and the 3rd floor quickly filled up with a wide mix of people from business suits to dreadlocks to hipsters to burners, etc. No doubt we were excited to mingle with the growing community of innovators and leaders here in Southern California. While the night was humid, we enjoyed some cocktails, watched a dance crew shake it out, bounced to the beats of the DJ and found some time to chat.
Another world is happening
Hub LA is about the power of people taking action for a better world. We are a new kind of membership club dedicated to the individuals and teams building the local, sustainable economy in Los Angeles and beyond. Anchored by a physical place, the Hub offers members access to 4,000 square feet of creative industrial space in the heart of the Arts District. We combine the best of a cafe, innovation lab, business accelerator, serviced office, and community center to create a place for meaningful encounters, productive work sessions, exchange and inspiration all with the ambition to spur social innovation.
Individuals and teams join Hub LA because of the inspiring environment; a curated community of diverse individuals and enterprises focused on creating positive change; and our focus on collaboration, programming and member engagement. As a part of the Global Hub Network, Hub LA members get immediate access to a vibrant global community and a brain trust of over 4000 individuals leading social innovation in cities around the world.
Our selected members are Impact Professionals – social entrepreneurs, investors, intrapreneurs, policy makers, artists, activists, students, scientists, technologists, and educators – individuals using their work to create positive social or environmental change. Their skills and focus span multiple sectors from education and clean tech, to design and media. www.thehubla.com

9/10/12 – BambooSK8 attended the FOX television celebrity eco casino and fundraiser at the Book Bindery in Culver City. Over $20k was raised on just 1 wheel spin game alone – supporting charities such as Heal the Bay and Habitat for Humanity. A ton of celebrities from all the FOX television shows was on hand including younger actresses like Zooey Deschanel to veterans such as academy award winner Melanie Griffith, casts of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE, NEW GIRL, GLEE, and more. The cool part of this event is that everything was done with an ecological responsible footprint from the carpet to the products given out. We helped contribute to the event by donating an Octobomb locker cruizer longboard, which was won by Max Greenfield from NEW GIRL. The night was action packed with delicious food, drinks, desserts… a variety of gambling… dj/music…a photo booth…eco vehicles from Ford, and a ton of photographers soaking up the celebs that showed up. We felt bad for the fans outside who were dying to just simply get an autograph or photo from one of them but they didn’t. Special thanks to Stefani and FOX for having us out. We look forward to next years event!

LA WEEKLY BLOG: Jesus Hates Skater Kids: ‘Lincoln Ramp’ Half Pipe in Venice Torn Down by Fun-Killers at United Methodist Church http://blogs.laweekly.com/informer/2011/05/lincoln_ramp_venice_torn_down_church.php
Andrew Reynolds filmed part of his Stay Gold Video here, the Termite kids skated with Shaun White a few weeks ago and so many skaters learned to skate here or practiced there. BambooSK8 did a 1 day teaching event at the school there to inspire the skate kids about the importance of education. We are sad to see that ramp go!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=939FACJV2dE
Shame on them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So many pastors feel their church is a hotel for saints and not a hospital for sinners. They have it all wrong!!!!!!!! I wish I had 10 minutes with that guy to see if he is beyond redemption or even has a soul…if he has any soul left…he may listen to an old youth pastor that is an advocate and knows the good that comes from skateboarding…ARGGGGGG! If you have his email…I would love to have it. Best of luck to Heidi and all her saints!

Bamboosk8 stopped by the LOS ANGELES GREEN EXPO at the LA convention center this past weekend. A variety of companies were present from solar energy to organic drinks to eco clothing and then a whole bunch of companies I couldn’t decifer what it was they do other than call themselves a “green” company. Nonetheless, it’s great to see the efforts of so many companies and people coming together for the collective spirt of change; positive green sustainable change.
A few of our favorites were:
topo ranch – www.toporanch.com – located on abbott kinney in venice
steaz – www.steazenergy.com – great energy drinks without all the “redbull sugar”
