See ya in the Funny Papers

Alright Alright so technically my internship is over but I didn’t say goodbye properly. And lets be honest, I wouldn’t be me if I wasn’t fashionably late. So I’ve had a great time with everyone this summer, I met some amazing people that I miss already. Luckly most still live in California so I can still bug them! And as for the rest of you, don’t you worry your pretty little heads about it, this won’t be the last you hear from me. I am still going to be here but working on the Marketing and Product Development stuff for the parent company and continuing with developing the appareal line. Hopefully I can get some of the new interns to create some sweet designs with me! Busy busy lots of stuff to do!! But if you want something done, give it to a busy person! I’ve also decided that I am going to document my adventures in learning how to skateboard. Or learning how to not fall so much while on a skateboard rather…. so I’ll keep you posted when that project gets underway. I have a feeling isn’t going to be a painful one (I am not the most graceful person). But luckily my darling Andrew said he was teach me a thing or two. Perhaps Jen and I will reach our dreams of becoming professional skateboarders at the age of 25!! Seems like the right time to pick up the sport, right? ;) Well time to get back to work, got lots of designs to work on, products to market, and things to invent! Till next time…

Those who wear Tin Foil hats should not play in Thunderstorms!!

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

So all the interns have been busy with all these great events going on over the last couple of weeks and from what I hear they did a great job! Me, on the other hand, instead of battling large crowds at the Maloof Money Cup I was battling Mother Nature. This past weekend I once again returned home to Michigan for a much anticipated camping trip with my family and their friends from high school that I grew up with. This is a camping trip that we’ve done the same weekend for the last 20 years and this year I took on the role of planning the activities. And it turned out fantastic. I planned out and organized our ‘Camping Olympics’ which involved everyone splitting up into teams and competing against one another in Corn Hole, Ladder Ball, a putting contest  and then they proceeded to play Yatzee or Spoons. Which if you have never played Spoons I suggest you make sure you have health insurance beforehand because it gets intense. I’m not going to lie, I was caught a few times jumping and screaming bloody murder across the picnic table in search for the last spoon.

Then after dinner the teams also competed in a Jiffy-Pop Pop-Off and then Camping Taboo which I had created that incorporated all the themes, activities, places, adventures or things having to do with our camping trips of the last 20 years. With some assistance of my mother we came up with the fantastic theme of ‘Foiled again!’ This means that on Saturday night (when we do our big group dinner with all 40 of us!!) everyone had to cook their food in tin foil. But to make things more entertaining and slightly ridiculous, everyone was required to make an accessory of tin foil and wear it to dinner! It was fantastic to see everyone’s creativity and geeky side come out in full swing! Here are just a few pictures for your viewing pleasure.

So as we are sitting there in all of our tin foil glory, my dad proceeds to inform us all of this monstrous storm that is cross Wisconsin and should be reaching us within a few hours. So imagine if you will 40 people sitting in the middle of the woods covered in tin foil with a severe thunderstorm on the horizon. In any normal situation, you would think that these people might get up, seek shelter and remove the tin foil from the tops of their heads… nope. We finish dinner, refill our adult beverages and gather our chairs around the bonfire to continue with the festivities… a Jiffy-Pop Pop-Off!! Which sadly enough I did not capture on video but it was hilarious. There was jumping, dancing, singing, and lots of shaking done in, around, and over the fire. While comical, I do believe that we had mistakenly preformed a native Indian rain dance and brought on the rain sooner than expected. But the rain did not stop us, once it let up a little and we made sure our fire was still blazin’ we returned to the fire for round two of the contest only to be rained out again. And again you would think that after a second time being caught in the rain that any normal person might just simply retire to their camper or tent if you are a real camper seeing as how it was already approaching midnight. (Sidenote: for those of you that no me or my family, we have never made any claims to being normal or anywhere near it.) So we return to the fire for a third and then forth time to finally view clear skies till about 3:30 am, when either the early morning hours or the adult beverages have taken everyone captive. Luckily just in time, for nearly an hour later the mother of all storms comes rolling through! Don’t get me wrong, I love me a good thunderstorm and miss them seeing as though San Diego does not see much of them, but I do not suggest enjoying or watching a storm from inside a very small tent, with very thin walls, and very low to the ground! Let’s just say that Dana did not get much sleep that night for fear of floating away from the monsoon that seemed to happening out doors or the deafening thunder that made the ground feel as though we had pitched our tent on the rail road tracks with a high speed train barreling down it, never mind the lightning that light up the campground to intensely and frequently that I seriously contemplated putting my sunglasses on so I might be able to go back to sleep! After about an hour I was finally able to go back to bed and get a couple more hours of sleep before we had to pack everything up, which was still soaking wet. But I wouldn’t have changed a single moment! I miss Michigan and the amazing light flickering, wall shaking, tent flooding thunderstorms that happen only in Northern Michigan. I love camping!!

Partying with the Pope!

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

So this week we sadly enough had to say goodbye to our favorite blonde BambooSk8 buddy and mascot, Pope!! Pope was from the last intern class and one of my favorites! So Wednesday we all got together to give him a proper sending off… needless to say we all stayed up way past our bedtimes and were less than chipper in the morning but it was worth it.

Here is some pictures of Pope and his favorite ladies and his boys!!!

As I’ve sure you’ve already read but Jessee, Brian and I got to go enjoy the X-games with Mark, Andrew, and Geoff. Jessee already went into great detail about it so if you would like to hear more I suggest you wait 20 minutes and read her blog again. Otherwise hang in there, I’m working on creating a video of my favorite clips from the event. But it’s taking a little longer than expected since my computer hates me and I am still looking for the that perfect song for my video stars to rockout too. So stay tuned for those fun filled adventures!

What the French Toast!?!?!

Monday, July 19th, 2010

Oh what a crazy couple of weeks! Its crunch time now for the Launch Party and we’ve still got lots of stuff to organize but after all the sweet merch we got in this week its coming together quite nicely! This party is going to be a blast! I’m excited for it! So we just got done with our Mid-term this past week and let me tell you what… to all those little kiddies out there… my advice is to take some business classes!! Although this week has been stressful it has been a great learning experience about all the inner workings of a company. On top of all this I’ve been busy with the new shirt designs for the party. We’ve got another round of shirt being printed as we speak and some new designs going to the printers next week which I think should turn out pretty sweet! I’ll post those up once they are completed. Well that’s all for now, got to get back to the sketch pad!

Message for the Mitten…

Sunday, July 4th, 2010

Hey guys, so it’s been a couple weeks since we talked last and so much has happened. First off things have been moving right along with our Launch Party, we’ve got some great bands performing and some sweet donations for the raffles and the silent auction. And Jessee and I went shopping the other week so I’ve got a cute dress to wear to the event too! Pretty pumped! There were a couple designs that I finished last week that I made a mock up of this week and have been rockin’ all week! I have also posted a picture of it below! The jacket turned out pretty sweet. What else has been going on? Oh I went to the fair!!! Unfortunately I was not successful with my mission to uncover some of my most favorite fair food, elephant ears!!  But went on a big scary ride instead. Luckily I did not die as I thought I was going to while waiting in the line for 45 minutes. But it ended up being worth it, it was fun and I got a nice strawberry sundae as a reward for being a big girl! This week I’m actually back home in Michigan this week for the Fourth of July weekend, just been working on the posters for the launch party while sitting out on the dock and doing some t-shirt designs while on the boat.  So the past two weeks have been pretty busy, so being back on the lake in Michigan has been a pretty refreshing change of pace. It’s been a pretty rough weekend thus far between the boating and bonfires, but I think I’ll survive. Well got to go get on the Wakeboard  and tear it up a little bit before hittin’ the town tonight for Karaoke at the local bar!

Rollin Right Along…

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Hey guys, Dana here again. So I’m just jumping into my third week and have already done so much and still have tons to do. Right now I am just getting some stuff together for an exhibit that BambooSK8 will be featured in up in LA at the California African American Museum. The exhibit is call How We Roll, which will highlight four decades of skateboard legends of color that helped layout incredible core achievements in skate board culture. We will be in the eco-friendly section that they will also be showcasing. This exhibit will be on display for about 6 months starting July 22, 2010, so if you are in the area you should definitely go check it out and let me know! But even more exciting than that, I get to use my degree to work on some designs for the company! Some of the other interns and I are working on some new t-shirt designs and possibly much more, so stayed tuned for that! They’re going to be sick! But it hasn’t been just all work; I got to go to my first Padres game here with some of the guys from work. It’s definitely a lot different than a Tigers game but just as much fun!! Without doubt going to try to make it to another game when I have people come out to visit. Well got to be back to the sketch pad. Lots of exciting things to work on so keep checkin’ back! Laters.

Here we go!

Friday, May 21st, 2010

Hello world! Dana here just finishing up my first week at BambooSK8 and let me tell you it has been a blast! I just drove to California cross country from Detroit, MI where I was born and bred. I graduated from the College for Creative Studies which is a private art school located in Downtown Detroit, where I got a BFA in Product Design and Fiber Design. I have spent the last few years doing freelance work designing clothing, wedding dresses, home décor and holiday T-Shirts. Back at home I played co-ed flag football with my best friend but sadly had to leave the team before we went to the playoff games, but from the reports that I am getting from them they are still rocking it out! I also coach a cheerleading team for several years and have just started to get into boxing. I also recently learned how to wakeboard which I love doing at our lake house in Northern Michigan and hoping to expand my water sports activities to surfing now that I am out here in sunny California… which by the way is not so sunny in May I guess… sad face… but with or without sun this week has been nothing short of FUNtastic so far!!
