One month down

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

This past month has been a hectic month for all of the interns. Being introduced to the world of BambooSK8 has been a roller coaster ride. Learning the ways of every individual job that works BambooSK8 (Marketing, Social Media, PR) was a little rough to chew at first but with a little guidance I think we are all starting to finally get into the flow of things. Although I do get confused on some things, I am learning a lot, especially in social media, which I am in charge of, I’m learning what steps you have to take to really get your company out into the world and make your voice heard through social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. My biggest road block in this internship is definitely Hookit. Although it is not a difficult system to understand, it is a major part of this internship, especially for the leaders, Kyle and I. A lot of time and devotion needs to go into Hookit to make sure kids we add to our eco tribes are really doing what they need to do in order to keep their sponsorships and move on to higher levels within them.
On a lighter note there were a lot of fun events this first month that we attended like the Cardiff surf event and the channel 6 news tarp surfing. (I will include some pictures at the end of those events.) Another highlight of the month was our intern bowling night, we all found out how horrible we are at bowling, or at least I did, but it was a really good time to get to know who we will be working with for the next four months, and maybe even longer.
I also have had the privilege to do my true passion within the company and photograph any events and products BambooSK8 attend/come out with, so I’ve had a lot of fun with that.

Grade Your Green-ness!

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

As we come to the close of week 4, it’s becoming more and more apparent that there is a whole world hidden behind the small front of a
skateboard company. One of my big projects is to work with the Outdoor IndustryAssociation and the Sustainable Apparel Coalition on creating an Eco Index for the BambooSK8 company as a whole. This is essentially a program on which we are able to score and grade how “green” our company actually is. This is a program that is still in very early stages and is still going through pilot test programs, which we are lucky enough to be a part of.

There are many different levels and sectors in which this index can be used, whether it be for a specific product or a company as a whole. As this program progresses and becomes more fine tuned, its uses will become apparent. Companies will strive to be a part of this program, because
people will understand and value the power of being eco conscious.

Time Flies…

Last week was really hectic here at BambooSK8. The interns had to figure out what commitments they are going to work towards during this internship. I’ll be working on our HookIt and Twitter social media platforms. If you have an account on either social media site be sure to check us out! I’ll also be working on our Youtube/Vimeo channels, so keep an eye out for some new videos in the future. Another goal of mine is to get into more of the “old school” shops that aren’t really into using emails or websites via mail. Finally I’m trying to draw more unique visitors to our website, so thanks for spending time on our site!

This past weekend BambooSK8 attended the MOSTIC skate demo at Ocean Beach Surf & Skate. A great time was had by all that came out! BambooSK8 raffled off a deck and there was some great skating by MOSTIC team riders Patrick Donivan and Joel Mercier. Our videographer Nate got in on the skating action too!

This week has been a lot less hectic now that everyone has figured out exactly what they are doing. In my free time I’ve been surfing as much as the waves will let me. It’s been kind of small lately, but I’m heading down to Blacks today to try and catch some bigger waves. The past few nights the waves have looked really cool because they’ve been glowing with algae! I took some video of it two nights ago. Check it out!

It’s the 4th week of this radical world of Bamboo! The Cardiff by-the-sea event was awesome. I had so much fun doing that event and selling decks. Well i’m in charge of sales in this internship now. I am coming for you Florida so be ready for BambooSK8 to take you over slowly. I will also be visiting skate shops and skate parks from L.A to San Diego, repping our boards as hard as I can. The world of Bamboo is coming for you guys and it will swallow you up soon enough! Interns you guys are ripping keep up the good work!

Keep it real,

Woodrow

Week 4 at Bamboo Sk8

Monday, September 26th, 2011

The first month at Bamboo Sk8 is almost over but it has been fun.  We have worked a couple ec0-friendly events where I have sold some decks and met a lot of cool people.  Right now I am working on getting us some press in local newspapers and some magazines.  The other day I got us mentioned in the North County times for an event we were working.  Also, the other interns and I have been working on ideas to build our presence in all social media outlets.  Its been pretty tough coming up with unique ideas but its also interesting to think about what works and what doesn’t on the social media sites.  So far the internship has been a good learning experience and I hope in the next couple of weeks that I learn even more about the industry.

Until next time,

Tyler

Boards, Bamboo, and Babes

Saturday, September 17th, 2011

Well hello out there in the digital bamboo forest!

The first few weeks at BambooSK8 have been fast and furious, but definitely worthy of a little jealousy. Our team of interns alone is enough to make one green with envy; we’re basically a dream team, an elite group of sustainable skateboard ninjas on bamboo if you will. We’re here to kick ass and take names. Actually, we’re here to promote sustainability, sell sick bamboo decks, hit up the best events, create and innovate, and learn our butts off….but isn’t that basically one in the same?

Our skill set is diverse, as are our personalities, but combined we’re like the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers when their rings unite. Props to the big guys at BambooSK8 for assembling the best group of people I could possibly ask to work with (hey, our bosses aren’t half bad either). Although things have just started to get rolling here in intern class 11, we’ve already done a crazy amount of cool things and made some serious headway in the learning and planning departments. To be quite honest with you, theres far too much to tell you about for one blog post….plus, I obviously want to leave you all hanging!

Updates, photos, and all around awesome stuff soon to come!

Peace&Love

Hi Internet!

Friday, September 16th, 2011

I’m Kyle Kasulis,
I hail all the way from northern Virginia right outside of Washington DC. I started surfing, skating, and snowboarding at a young age and that passion for board sports has never left me. After completing college at Virginia Tech, the drive to be more involved in the action sports industry brought me out west to BambooSK8.

This week has been busy but fun so far! On Monday the interns headed to Point Loma Nazarene University for their annual Green Fest. We had an opportunity to spread the word about BambooSK8 and sold some decks. Another event that BambooSK8 will be attending is The Cardiff Surf Classic & Rerip Green Fest. We did a fun segment promoting the event on San Diego 6 this morning. A few of us tarp surfed while Mark Olson, the operations manager, talked about the boards we offer.

Getting ready to go on air...

The Cardiff event should be a fun this weekend, and I’m stoked to check it out!

And we’re off!

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

So week one at BambooSK8 was a bit of a luxury, just kind of got to know each other, got introduced to the network, went to a small event to get used to setting up and selling to people. I went pretty smoothly, we all got to sell a deck. Now week two thats a different story, all the interns had to dive right into work this week. We get to be on channel 6 news tomorrow for a tarp surfing event which is pretty cool, then we have to go set up for the Cardiff Surf Classic & Rerip Green Fest (http://cardiffsurfclassic.com/) so that should be pretty cool!

Until Next time!

The Wonderful World of Bamboo

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

After graduating from the University of Redlands, with a degree in Environmental Studies, I thought I had my life all planned out. I was going to join the Peace Corps at the end of August 2011 and serve for 27 months in Nicaragua where I would be working with their current school system in setting up an environmental education program. The process of applying, interviewing and a whole lot of waiting took about a year and a half. During this long period life began to change a bit, which it tends to do whether you want it to or not, and I came to the conclusion that I no longer had my heart in the task at hand and kindly declined my invitation. It felt as if a weight had been lifted off of my shoulders. This sense of peace was only momentary though because I began to realize that my life, which seemed to have a plan previously, had absolutely no direction. This is where my search for opportunities in my general area began.

I knew I wanted to focus on looking for a company that had environmental values and focuses similar to my own. I stumbled upon BambooSk8 when searching eco-conscious businesses in the San Diego County.  In the recent years it has been increasingly apparent that being “green” is no longer a trend but a necessity, that all people need to focus on. BambooSk8 is an extremely one of a kind company that is bringing to necessity of being environmentally friendly to the skate world. Bringing together two realms and proving that all  people from all walks of life can make changes in order to help our planet. I am very excited to be a part of BambooSk8 and I look forward to learning everything I can from the four amazing months in my future!

The new world of BambooSK8

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

I came to BambooSK8 to learn and gain experience in the action sport industry. Since I was little I have always wanted to be in the action sport industry to stay around what I love most which is surfing and skating. I came across BambooSK8 internship which sounded like a perfect thing to get my foot into the door, and to gain the knowledge that want and need. I have already learned a lot about marketing and how to promote a product through social media and networking in events. I just moved to San Clemente, CA last month to be part of this industry because there really wasn’t much of action sport side of Florida.  My goals while i’m here are to work as hard as I can to be apart of this company, to learn and gain the most experience I can to understand the industry, and to learn how to promote the product the most effect ways you possible can.

New beginnings

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

Hey all you out there in the blogosphere,

I’m Tyler one of the interns from class 11 at Bamboo Sk8.  We are just starting week 2 here and things have been going well so far.  It has been a crazy two weeks for me because I just moved out here from Colorado but I finally found an apartment and am excited to move off of my buddy’s couch!

I wanted to join the Bamboo Sk8 team because it seemed like the perfect stepping stone for a career in the action sports industry.  I have been snowboarding, wakeboarding, and longboarding for about 15 years but I felt like now was the time to try to get into the business side of the industry.  I have learned a lot in my first two weeks and yesterday I sold my first longboard at the Point Loma Sustainability Fair!  All in all its pretty good out here in Oceanside.

Until next time,

Tyler
