Rollin Right Along…

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Hey guys, Dana here again. So I’m just jumping into my third week and have already done so much and still have tons to do. Right now I am just getting some stuff together for an exhibit that BambooSK8 will be featured in up in LA at the California African American Museum. The exhibit is call How We Roll, which will highlight four decades of skateboard legends of color that helped layout incredible core achievements in skate board culture. We will be in the eco-friendly section that they will also be showcasing. This exhibit will be on display for about 6 months starting July 22, 2010, so if you are in the area you should definitely go check it out and let me know! But even more exciting than that, I get to use my degree to work on some designs for the company! Some of the other interns and I are working on some new t-shirt designs and possibly much more, so stayed tuned for that! They’re going to be sick! But it hasn’t been just all work; I got to go to my first Padres game here with some of the guys from work. It’s definitely a lot different than a Tigers game but just as much fun!! Without doubt going to try to make it to another game when I have people come out to visit. Well got to be back to the sketch pad. Lots of exciting things to work on so keep checkin’ back! Laters.

Peace, Love & Coco Puffs!

Dragon Skate Race May 23rd

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

Hey there Bamboo skaters and enthusiasits! I just felt the need to extend the invitation to come see us this Sunday at the Dragon Skate Race in Irvine, CA. This is a totally rad downhill longboarding competition for Free Wheelchair Mission (a non-profit dedicated to donating wheelchairs to developing nations around the world) and is hosted by the guys from UCI’s Beta Theta Pi. We are going to have decks ready to demo, as well as some sweet discounts to partake in.

The event is from 11 am – 5 pm in Irvine, CA at California Avenue, below Anteater Drive, across from the Anteater Recreation Center.  There is going to be live music, Chronic Tacos, raffles for free decks, skate park for the trick skaters and a downhill bomb and slalom competition. Admission is FREE, but if you want to skate the park it is $5 and if you want to participate in the race it is $10.

I hope to see you there, I’ll have the grip tape ready!

Hey everyone out there in cyberspace, I hope I am coming in clear through all that space debris.  My name is Erick Haman and I am on my first day of work here as a marketing intern for BambooSk8.  I am stoked to be starting here and working with a company that combines ethical practices with a great product.  I guess I will kick this off by talking a little bit about myself.  I grew up here in North County, San Diego.  I was surfing and skating throughout my childhood and continue to participate in these sports.  I also took up sailing in high school and which I continued as an interest in College going all the way as to live on a sailboat for over 2 years.  I attended Cal State Long Beach for the last 4 years and just finished yesterday, gaining a Bachelors in International Studies.  My concentration was in Latin America with a lot of emphasis on developmental and environmental studies.  While getting my bachelors I studied abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina and had the time of my life while picking up Spanish and surfing all over the south america continent.  Aside from my studies I was an NCAA athlete for CSULB, pole vaulting on their track and field team.  I look forward to working with BambooSk8 and getting my foot in the door here in the action sports industry.  You all shall here again from me soon!

ciao,

Erick

Almost a year

Friday, May 21st, 2010

It’s been almost a year since my last post and a lot has happened.  After embarking Bamboo Sk8, I had no idea where I was going with my career or life.  While Bamboo Sk8 gave me some experience and insight into a startup, I was still anxious about the job market, my resume, living at home :( , etc.  While this was one of the hardest times in my life, it gave me the chance to really think about my passions in life.  A lot of my friends were complaining about the timing of graduating college and the “Great Recession”, however I looked at it a lot different.  If the job market wasn’t so poor, I would have jumped into a career right after college.  Instead, I struggled, lived at home, and really had the time to contemplate what makes me happy.

I eventually decided that I wanted to build something.  I wanted to create.  I wanted to help people and make my own goals.  Thus, Vertical Earth Gardens was born.  I patented a vertical hydroponics garden with the help of a buddy, and decided this was the perfect time to try to turn a hobby into a business.

So far, I have learned more than I could have ever dreamed of in the last year.  It has been a lot of ups and downs, and I have been learning the emotional rollercoaster Wyatt and Geoff experience on a daily basis.  With that said, it has also been the most rewarding experience of my life.  I’ll leave the interns and fellow readers with this…… if you are struggling with what to do in life and where you are going, know that you can pursue your own path and own ideas.

Here is a great inspirational  documentary for the skate arena……——->

Here we go!

Friday, May 21st, 2010

Hello world! Dana here just finishing up my first week at BambooSK8 and let me tell you it has been a blast! I just drove to California cross country from Detroit, MI where I was born and bred. I graduated from the College for Creative Studies which is a private art school located in Downtown Detroit, where I got a BFA in Product Design and Fiber Design. I have spent the last few years doing freelance work designing clothing, wedding dresses, home décor and holiday T-Shirts. Back at home I played co-ed flag football with my best friend but sadly had to leave the team before we went to the playoff games, but from the reports that I am getting from them they are still rocking it out! I also coach a cheerleading team for several years and have just started to get into boxing. I also recently learned how to wakeboard which I love doing at our lake house in Northern Michigan and hoping to expand my water sports activities to surfing now that I am out here in sunny California… which by the way is not so sunny in May I guess… sad face… but with or without sun this week has been nothing short of FUNtastic so far!!

First Blog :)

Hello everyone!

I’m so excited to be starting my internship with BambooSk8. When I interviewed for the internship I couldn’t believe how perfect of a place the company was for me. I just finished working as the marketing and promotions coordinator for the nonprofit group Green Campus. Green Campus works with universities around the country to teach and install eco-friendly technologies like solar panels, smart lighting, and heat transferable turf fields. I worked to promote a new iniciative to be on the student election ballot. Basically my job was to convince the students to vote yes on a $6 tuition increase that would, over the course of 10 years, add up to $10 million to go towards construction of renewable energy sources on UCSB’s campus. The initiative passed and construction begins this summer. My favorite thing about Green Campus’s project is the installation of eco-friendly soccer fields. The fields are made from a type of turf that not only absorbs the heat from the sun but then conducts the heat and energy into a generator and heats the nearby swimming pools as well as provides electricity for the also near by recreational center. UCSB, thanks to this initiative, currently hold the highest budget for renewable energy of any university in the country, and my name gets to go on that record breaker. A big part of working for Green Campus was planning awareness events such as eco-friendly bbqs and performace displays. I really love planning events like these and would really like to get on the event planning portion of BambooSk8. Its really exciting :) So needless to say finding an eco-friendly skateboard company was right up my alley.

I am stuck up here in Santa Barbara though, getting my bachelors degree until mid June. But I’ll be working as hard and as often as I can through emails and skype meetings to keep on track with the BambooSk8 team. I can’t wait to graduate, get down there and really get to work.

Adios,

Heather <3

New Beginnings

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Wow, I am stoked to be here at BambooSk8. This is my first week here in the cave and there is already so much to do. Right now Dan, Stephen and I are having a hard time tackling our tasks because the other interns are depriving us our In and Out Burger that they left to pick up over an hour ago. Lame. Well a little about me: I grew up surfing the white water and skating the boardwalks of sunny Florida. After I graduated college, I moved to snowboard/longboard heaven, Vail, CO where I averaged over 100 days per year on the hill. I moved here literally 4 days ago – I knew I was destined for San Diego because here I can pursue all of my boardsport passions in one place (Big Bear is close enough.) BambooSk8 is the beginning of combining my passion with my career and I am looking forward to all that this summer is going to bring. See you in the bowls!

OVER AND OUT

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

Wow, this has been such a good experience for me. It was really fun getting to know all of the guys at BambooSK8 and establishing relationships that will hopefully last for a long time. I think the best parts about this, besides meeting everyone, was the Clash at Clairemont event. I felt like that was one of the bigger things that I was able to contribute to and had a blast! It was worth all the work for sure. This has truely been a good experience and will help me in the future find more good experiences. SKATE BAMBOO!!!!!!!

Hows it goin?!? Jared Vandagriff here, day one is in the books and it is already exceeding all my expectations. Super pumped on the internship and what lyes ahead. For me this internship is the key to getting my foot in the backdoor of an industry that is so hard to get into, and we are just steps from the beach. A bit about me… Im a current student at FIDM in Los Angeles, studying to get my BS degree in Business Management. I also recently graduated from FIDM in LA with an Associates of Arts Degree in Graphic Design. I love surfing, skating, and art, so why not work and learn from a company that has so much of these to offer. I am really looking forward to working with Bamboo Sk8, Yew!!!

Adios!!

What is up…

Whats goin on…my name is Stephen Munoz and it’s my first day here with the fantastic company that is Bamboo Sk8.  I am super stoked about this summer and all that it has to offer, there’s nothing better than learning how to do a job well with the beach just steps away.  Sooo a little bit about me, I grew up in Escondido CA and have been skateboarding for as long as I can remember.  Soon I picked up surfing and eventually fell head over heels for snowboarding.  I got my degree in Marketing at a little school in West Texas called Abilene Christian University.  I spent four years there but I’m back for good so watch out San Diego!!  I cannot wait for this summer to get going…there are a lot of good things in store around Bamboo Sk8 so everyone should keep their eyes peeled for us.  Pieces

Final Thoughts

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Coming into BambooSK8 I didn’t know what to expect. I knew the company was small, and I had read the website so I knew a little about the products but other than that I didn’t have much background information. It was also my first internship. I had heard stories about some internships where you’re expected to get coffee and that’s about it. I had no interest in that sort of work. I think smaller companies have better internship programs because 1) they need things done and 2) they aren’t tied up in corporate protocols and security measures. BambooSK8’s program is very reliant on self motivation. There aren’t tasks handed out, there aren’t projects that are supposed to be completed. There’s you, your brain, and a sales target. GO. In some respects that’s really cool because not many companies will let you run with ideas the way you can at BambooSK8. On the other hand, it can feel very directionless and unorganized at times. Like anything, the more time put into an internship the more you can take away from it. I highly suggest planning on being in the office more than once a week. Its not required, but there’s enough going on in the office every day that I felt like I missed a lot only being there Tuesdays. Overall it was a good experience and I understand more about the science of business than I did walking in. Be prepared to come up with lots of ideas and operate with minimal supervision. Also putting in some extra face time at the office is beneficial. Have fun Class 7!

Final Post

So our four months have come to an end here at BambooSK8. I have had great experience here, meeting and working with the interns as well as the staff. For me it’s all about the people you work with, and the people here at BambooSK8 were some of the best I have worked with. I feel like things just fit well with our intern class, everyone one was really nice and had something different to bring to the table. We had some great times that I will never forget, like our fundraising party, or the trip to mission beach for a kit boarding contest, and going to a celebrity gifting event in LA, just to name a few. We grew really close and I hope to stay in contact with everyone. I just want to say thanks to everyone at BambooSK8 and class 6 for giving me this great experience.

Intern Class 7

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Hello. Dan Lorber here. Newest intern and all around superstar at the Bamboosk8 Headquarters. Supposed to blog a little diddy about myself, so here goes. I was Born and raised here in sunny San Diego. I started surfing, skating, and snowboarding at a relatively young age.  I pretty much love to do anything that involves a board. I attended Mt. Carmel High School where I swam and played water polo.  I then attended Cal State Northridge in Los Angeles where I received a bachelor’s degree in finance. After college I lived in South Lake Tahoe for a while and obtained a California Real Estate License.  Currently, I live in Solana Beach, CA where I surf on the reg, shred the occasional mini ramp and snowboard as much as possible. I’m looking forward to this internship experience very much. I want to learn and grow as much as I can personally and professionally.  I love the action sports industry and can’t wait to be part of it. (And maybe slang a house or two on the side!)

Hey Friends

Monday, May 10th, 2010

So, I guess I am Brian Rock…whats up?  I am originally from Reno, Nevada where I grew to love everything action sports related.  I grew up skating, biking, skiing and then found my true love, the snowboard.  I rode all of the resorts up in Tahoe and just love it up there.  I am going to school out in Utah where there is also great resorts that keep me going.  I’m studying advertising and want to learn more about marketing and advertising in the action sport world.  This is why I am out here in Oceanside this summer doing this internship with Bamboosk8.  It is the first day and I am just stoked to be out here.  I can’t wait to have some fun this summer.

BambooSK8 class 6 graduation

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

We are very proud to grant 5 of the starting 7 interns from class 6 with the thrill of GRADUATING!  Class 6 was by far the best class we’ve ever had and it was awesome that they also spent so much time hanging out and building long-lasting friendships.   Already, we’ve been able to get Matt an interview with Haro Bicycles who did really well and we’ll find out soon if he got the position.  Enjoy the pictures from the party which was held at Mark and Andrews crib in Oceanside.
